Background InformationThe Council for World Mission (CWM) is an international community of Christian churches, with members drawn from across the world, focussing its work in the four areas of financial sharing, personnel sharing, mission development and education, and communication. The Council emerged in its current form in 1977, although its historical roots can be traced back into the eighteenth century. In 1795, members of the Independent, Presbyterian and Anglican churches came together to form a Missionary Society, renamed the London Missionary Society (LMS) in 1818, and concentrating on mission and education in the South Pacific. Twentieth century decolonisation drove institutional reform, and in 1966 the LMS merged with the Commonwealth Missionary Society (established as the Colonial Missionary Society in 1836), to form the Congregational Council for World Mission. This in turn was the predecessor body of the current organisation. Charity no. 1097842, company no. 4758640. Source:
