Background Information

Established by Dr Douglas MacEwan as the Conservation Society, the organisation existed within the biocentric tradition of environmentalism, which came to the fore with the New Environmentalism of the 1960s and 1970s, epitomised by organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. A network of semi-autonomous local groups, the Society campaigned on issues such as the conservation of resources, and population and pollution control, and has had a close relationship with the Liberal Democrat party. In September 1987 the conservation society was absorbed (or succeeded) by the Conservation Trust.
