Background InformationThe Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom (CPBF) is a media pressure-group, working for "for a more accountable, freer and diverse media." The Campaign seeks greater democratic control of the media, a limit to the influence and prevalence of private media ownership, and the use of the media to educate and inform citizens, rather than simply be a purveyor of entertainment. There is also a particular concern with protecting the rights of media workers and unions. A large number of unions are and have been involved in the campaign, including, from the print industry, SOGAT, NATSOPA, NGA and SLADE, with others including NALGO, COSHE, NUPE, NUM, UPW USDAW, and FTAT. At the outset, campaign sponsors included MPs, union general secretaries, academics, bishops and journalists. An initial pamphlet, Towards Press Freedom, was published in 1979, with the journal Free Press coming the following year. Sources:; contact with NGO, April 2007
