Access RightsAs a general guideline, the BBC Written Archives Centre accepts academics of Undergraduate status and above, BBC Staff who are researching for programme purposes and authors of books or articles who have a publisher in place. All of the above are by appointment only and the Archives Centre is only open to external researchers on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between the hours of 09:45 and 17:00. In terms of access to the files themselves, similar to government bodies, the Centre allows external researchers to see files which contain papers dated up to and including the year 1979. So, for example, none of the 'BBC Children in Need' files are currently open to researchers whereas the 'BBC Children's Hour Christmas Appeal' files will be open for access as they date from before 1979. The Centre do, of course, provide access to more recent papers when obliged to fulfill their FOI obligations. The BBC WAC link below explains in full the access conditions, and gives a brief guide as to the sort of material that is held: http://www.bbc.co.uk/heritage/more/wac.shtml
