Background Information

Established 1958 as umbrella public relation and lobbying body for the conservation sector, with 292 groups having affiliated by 1962, representing over 80,000 individual members. It was initially a successful body but it suffered financial constraints and closed down in 1980,  with mantle taken on by Council for Environmental Conservation and Wildlife Link. Concerns included pesticide use and culling of seals and badgers. Established National Nature Week, and behind the establishment in 1959 of the Conservation Corps (later BCTV).
