Background Information

The Environmental Institute (EnvInst) has its origins in Sweeden and was set up in order "to establish the transparency and reliability of information on the environment". The Institute has encouraged numerous research initiatives into environmental matters and supports proactive measures to improve environmental practice through, in particular, improved information, standards and legal frameworks.

The Institute was represented at the 2nd Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1990, at the UN Conference in Rio on the Environment and Development in 1992 and at numerous other international meetings concerning the environment. The Institute is also registered as a non-governmental organisation accredited to participate in consultation with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is on the roster of the Secretary General of the United Nations for sustainable development (source: EnvInst website)
