Background Information

The Gay Liberation Front (GLF) was formed by LSE students Aubrey Walter and Bob Mellors, inspired by the American body of same name, which had been formed in the wake of the 1969 Stonewall riots. Short-lived, but hugely significant in the history of gay activism, the GLF held its first meeting at the LSE in October 1970. By the following year, its weekly meetings were attracting over four-hundred people. 1971 marked the high-point for the organisation, with the publication of its Manifesto, and a series of high-profile direct actions, including the disruption of the launch of the Church-based morality campaign, Festival of Light.
