Background InformationThe Commonwealth Industries Association was one of a number of groups on the right wing of British politics that sought the strengthening of the political and economic unity of the British Empire/Commonwealth, principally through the maintenance of preferential tariff barriers, a policy partly fulfilled by the 1932 Ottawa preference agreements. In 1947, the Association absorbed the British Empire League (BEL), although the latter organisation continued to maintain a separate identity, and ultimately closed in the 1950s.
