Background InformationThe British Commonwealth Union was a right-wing, pro-business pressure group, seeking to secure a strong voice for its views in Parliament, and operating in a more overtly political way than the Federation of British Industry. Its wish to see closer Commonwealth ties was reflected by its involvement in the tariff reform debates of the early twentieth century. From the mid-1920s, it became absorbed by the Empire Industries Association.
