Background InformationThe Agricultural Party was a protectionist pressure group, established by JF Wright. Backed by Lords Rothermere and Beaverbrook, it enjoyed a brief popularity, existing within the context of the tariff reform debate, which gripped the Right of British politics in the early twentieth century, and culminated in the 1932 Ottawa preference agreements covering Britain and the Commonwealth. The Party unsuccessfully fought the 1933 Fife by-election. Source: Barberis et al Encyclopedia of British and Irish Political Organizations 2000 p21
