Background InformationThe Anti-Poll Tax Campaign opposed the introdution of the Community Charge, or poll tax, by the Thatcher Government. The loose campaign, coordinated by the Anti-Poll Tax Federation, saw a high level of non-payment, and tensions reached their height with a riot in Trafalgar Square in 1990. Widely seen as a major political misjudgement by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the poll tax was a major contributory factor to her downfall later in the year, and was replaced under her successor, John Major.
