Background InformationWWF-UK is the UK branch of a major international conservation charity, with offices in 35 countries. The World Wildlife Fund began in Switzerland, founded by Sir Julian Huxley, Guy Mountfort, Peter Scott and Max Nicholson. It was originally conceived as a fund-raising mechanism for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but soon developed priorities and an identity of its own. National appeals were organised to raise money, with the UK appeal becoming WWF-UK. In 1986 the organisation changed its name to the World Wide Fund for Nature, emphasising its concern with the entirety of biodiversity, rather than just animals. Generally, however, the body uses the WWF initials, and its exclusive focus remains endangered species in the wild. Sources:; McCormick The Global Environmental Movement 1995 pp46-8
