Background Information

The Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom promotes the lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet (the avoidance of meat, fish, crustaceans and slaughter by-products, but acceptance of eggs and dairy) in the UK. The Society provides advice and information, accredits vegetarian food, and lobbies government and the food industry. A Vegetarian Society was established in 1847. The National (previously London) Food Reform Society merged with this organisation in 1885, but broke away three years later as the London Vegetarian Society. The current Society is a result of a remerger of the two organisations, in 1969. The Society is affiliated to the European Vegetarian Union, and the International Vegetarian Union. Source:
