Background Information

WaterAid was established following the UK's Thirsty Third World Conference in 1981 (set up in response to the UN Decade of Drinking Water and Sanitation) in order to improve "access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world's poorest communities." It works collaboratively with local partners to ensure sustainable and practical water and sanitation solutions on the ground and with international bodies to develop appropriate and fair policies. Since its first projects in Zambia and Sri Lanka, it has grown rapidly: by 1985 it had expanded to several other countries including Ethiopia, Uganda and Nepal and by 1993 it had seen in its 1000th project. This growth has continued, mirroring new clean water objectives featuring heavily on the international agenda (in 2000 access to clean water was part of the UN Millennium Development Goals; in 2002 water was declared a human right; in 2005 the UN Decade for Action on Water was launched) (source:; VAD, 2005, p.399)
