Background InformationThe Green Party is a political party that aims to put ecological concerns at the heart of political decision-making. It was Europe's first such party, coming a year after Green parties had been established in Australia and New Zealand, amidst the more general wave of biocentric environmentalism that gathered path from the late 1960s onwards. The Green Party enjoyed a dramatic spike in public support at the 1989 elections to the European Parliament, driving the Liberal Democrats into fourth place nationally with 14.9% of the vote, but has generally failed to make a major impact within the constraints of the UK's electoral system. The current name was adopted in 1985. In 1979 a Scottish Ecology Party (now the Scottish Green Party) was formed, as part of the UK-wide organisation. This became an independent party in 1990. The Green Party in Northern Ireland has also become an independent organisation, leaving the Green Party covering England and Wales.
