Background Information

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a personal development scheme for young people aged fourteen to twenty-five, covering elements such as service to the community, the development of skills, physical recreation and undertaking expeditions. A pilot scheme for boys was launched in 1956, and for girls two years later, with the award as it now stands launched in 1969.
